Master documentary-maker Werner Herzog's examination of US prisoners awaiting execution, a companion piece to his film Into the Abyss. Herzog analyses what makes people kill and why, in turn, they are to be killed by the state.

Originally a TV mini-series comprising four episodes, each focusing on a particular case. Interviews with the convicted murderers on death row make up most of the running time, supplemented by interviews with family members and others related to the case.
