First Reviews for ‘The LEGO Movie’
We have to wait until April to see it, but The LEGO Movie (in 2D and 3D) opens in the US and UK this week. See below for a sample of the first reviews which are nearly universal in praise.
The stop-motion-simulating CG animated family flick follows Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt) – a decidedly average little LEGO man – who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person ever and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of heroes – including Batman (Will Arnett), Green Lantern (Johah Hill), Superman (Channing Tatum) – on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant.
VARIETY: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller irreverently deconstruct the state of the modern blockbuster and deliver a smarter, more satisfying experience in its place, emerging with a fresh franchise for others to build upon.
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: A full-throttle, giddily inventive, all-ages joyride that buoyantly boosts the bar for 3D computer-animated movies.
EMPIRE: A film that’s insane, witty, uneven and almost certain to delight anyone who’s ever laid hands on Lego.
TWITCH: Skeptics, leave your grumblings at home… a blast, a plaything for any age, an exquisite assembly that’s literally more than the sum of its parts. For as per the song that runs throughout: ‘Everything is awesome, everything is cool.’
TOTAL FILM: Ridiculously funny and meticulously detailed, The LEGO Movie is far better than a toy tie-in movie has any right to be. Despite a couple of dips, you’ll be grinning throughout.
The LEGO Movie opens in NZ on April 17 and Australia on April 3. More on the film here.
