June is the month to snuggle up inside and sink into some thrillers and crime dramas. Here are the new shows to streaming that Jenna Guillaume says will definitely fit the bill…
Deadloch
From the comedic genius brains of Kate McCartney and Kate McClennan comes this crime comedy (yes, comedy) that offers a very Aussie—and very irreverent—take on somber mystery series like Broadchurch and True Detective. Two very different detectives — who are both, for a change, women — are paired together to solve a murder in a small coastal town. It’s the perfect show for lovers and haters of crime dramas alike (as long as you have a sense of humour, of course). Kate Box, Madeleine Sami, and Nina Oyama star.
Barracuda Queens
This Swedish crime caper follows a group of teen girls—the titular Barracuda Queens—who, bored with their privileged lives, decide to rob the houses of their rich neighbours in a kind of modern-day Robin Hood gang. As you do. The series is actually based on a true story and looks to be a very fun and stylish ride.
The Light in the Hall
If you prefer your crime shows to actually be on the somber and serious side, this Welsh show is for you. It features the classic mystery of the disappearance of a young girl. Eighteen years later, the man convicted of her murder is released on parole, giving her grieving mother and her friend-turned-journalist their opening to find out what really happened. The mystery is interesting, if a little slow, helped along by incredible performances from Joanna Scanlan, Iwan Rheon, and Alexandra Roach.
Bloodhounds
This slick South Korean action-thriller follows two young boxers who get caught up in Seoul’s illegal money-lending business and make a deadly plan to bring down an evil loan shark themselves. The highlight of this series is the incredibly choreographed and executed fight scenes, of which there are plenty. Plus Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi have great chemistry together as the two boxers.
The Crowded Room
Partially inspired by a true case, The Crowded Room is another crime series, this time set in New York in 1979. Tom Holland plays a young guy named Danny Sullivan who is arrested for his apparent involvement in a shooting. Danny is troubled and seems to lose time, and he is forced to re-examine his life and wrestle with his own actions as he’s interrogated by investigator Rya Goodwin, played by Amanda Seyfried. The plot is pretty predictable, but nevertheless compelling. Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, and Jason Isaacs also star.
Class of ‘09
Not to be confused with Australian show Class of ‘07, Class of ‘09 is an American thriller set across three time periods—the past (2009), the present (2023), and the future (2034). It follows a group of FBI agents who grapple with the changing American criminal justice system as the growth of artificial intelligence impacts it drastically. It’s interesting to check in with the characters at vastly different times within each episode and connect the pieces of their lives and the story, and there’s no doubt the A.I. plot is painfully relevant right now. Kate Mara, Brian Tyree Henry, Sepideh Moafi, and Brian J Smith star.
Hijack
Real-time thrillers aren’t easy to pull off, but when they’re done well they’re, well, thrilling in a way that can’t be beat. Hijack is set over a seven-hour flight from Dubai to London, unfolding by the minute across seven episodes. As the name suggests, this isn’t any ordinary flight—the plane is hijacked, and a corporate negotiator, played by the ever-watchable Idris Elba, must use his skills to take down the hijackers and save everyone on board. It’s a little silly but a lot of fun.
