The Rig: Miniseries (January 6)
One of the world’s most extreme working environment only gets extremer-er in this limited series, following a communication crisis on an oil rig off the coast of Scotland. GoT stars Iain Glen and Mark Addy already have plenty on their hands—a mysterious fog obscuring the shore, supplies dwindling, no rescue in sight—before their crew start to turn on each other, paranoia rising after a devastating accident turns things from bad to worse. Prime promises a “character-driven mystery thriller”, with the merciless North Sea roiling in the background as a reminder of just how small and petty our human workplace squabbles can get.
Everything Everywhere All At Once (January 20)
You probably heard us raving about this inter-dimensional A24 joint while it was in cinemas, but now that it’s streaming, you can pause any frame for a peek into Michelle Yeoh’s psychedelic journey. With each watch, it turns out, the frenetic story seems more simple: at face value it’s about a dissatisfied laundry owner’s mid-life crisis, with each act getting her closer to properly appreciating her angsty daughter and meek husband. You just have to look past the sausage fingers, butt plugs, googley eyes and multiple Jamie Lee Curtis-es to get there.
Shotgun Wedding (January 27)
This action rom-com completely sold itself with the trailer’s scene of Jennifer Coolidge with a machine gun, so hopefully the gags and setpieces live up to that delirious grab at memedom. Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel star as a couple trying to reconcile their boisterous families whilst at their glam destination wedding, only for the whole event to turn very Die Hard when they’re all taken hostage. We’re sure that their cold feet and last-minute regrets will get warmed up by a few explosions, ending the whole thing in a well-earned “I do”.
