Top picks
Daisy Jones & The Six (March 3)
Whenever there’s lengthy song lyrics in a book, I tend to kinda skip past them: even Tolkien’s majestic Middle Earth poems can make my eyes glaze over a tad. That’s why I’m so keen to see Taylor Jenkins-Reid’s novel Daisy Jones & The Six get adapted with an all-singing, all-smooching cast of fab young stars. They’ve got all the artistic turmoil and romantic in-fighting of a certain 1970s ensemble we won’t name here (rhymes with Schmeetwood Schmac), and it’s all fronted by the fiery Riley Keough. Both known for her tempestuous ‘white trash’ characters and as Elvis’s granddaughter, she’s certain to sparkle onstage in this tale of a fictionalised rock band’s abrupt rise and fall.
Class of ’07: Season 1 (March 17)
Of all the events at which you wouldn’t want to overstay your welcome, an awkward high school reunion is certainly top of the list: how many photos of people’s kids, bitter adolescent memories, and ‘what was your name again”s can one person handle? The characters of this new Aussie series are, tragically, stranded in one long reunion after a tidal wave traps them at the function. Yikes. Great Australian stars such as Emily Browning, Caitlin Stasey, and Chi Nguyen will flesh out the unlucky batch of former school buddies, with old grudges and petty gossip probably just as threatening as their odds of survival.
Swarm (March 17)
I’ll be swarming to check out the next TV show from Atlanta‘s Donald Glover, starring a genuine protégé of Beyoncé as a Beyoncé-esque pop diva. One of her most intense worshippers (played by Dominique Fishback) takes a “dark turn”, and that’s practically all we know about this very modern and mysterious series. Should we be expecting a kind of episodic The King of Comedy for the stan generation? Dunno, but with Glover’s own experience as an idolised R&B star, he’s certain to bring some harsh and trippy truths to the thrilling series.
