My Policeman (November 4)

2022 is the year when we’ll all finally decide whether pop star Harry Styles has any chops as a film star. Based on the novel by Bethan Roberts, here’s his second period romance of the year, in which he stars alongside David Dawson as closeted lovers in 1950s Brighton.

Styles’ gay cop marries Emma Corrin despite his true feelings, and all that longing and persecution will come to the surface again when they all reunite in the same nursing home in the 1990s. The trio’s older versions are played by Linus Roache, Rupert Everett and Gina McKee, so if Styles sucks there’s plenty of pro talent to help him shine more.

The English: Season 1 (November 11)

Proper British screen talent meets the wild west in this rollicking revenge series, starring Emily Blunt as an aristocratic English dame getting gritty to avenge her lost son. Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, and Rafe Spall are there to scoff and swill tea too, while Chaske Spencer’s Pawnee Nation cavalry scout steps up as an unlikely ally. She’s after a bloody reckoning, but what we might get instead is some sobering themes of manifest destiny and freedom—with old-timey pistol and horse-riding action scenes too, of course.

Call Jane (November 25)

Based in the pro-choice activism of the late 1960s, this period drama couldn’t be coming out at a more appropriate time, with women’s reproductive rights threatened across the US. Elizabeth Banks stars as a married woman seeking a safe abortion, since the baby she’s carrying could end her life due to her heart condition. When an all-male medical establishment proves unhelpful, she meets up with characters played by Sigourney Weaver and Wunmi Mosaku: independent forces who prove so inspiring, the housewife starts to put her own future on the line to join their cause.
