Amsterdam (December 7)

Boy are the pickings on Disney+ pretty slim this month: not even a Muppets or Pixar Christmas special to cash in and keep us happy. Instead, you might want to experience some schadenfreude in the form of director David O Russell’s crime-caper feature, which flops from cinemas right onto the House of Mouse’s platform.

Despite an astounding cast which features multiple Oscar-winners, Taylor Swift, and Mike freakin’ Myers, Amsterdam got pennies at the box office and negative critical reception to boot. Maybe turn it on and make up your own mind, or at least enjoy some very glamorous people in nice period garb.

National Treasure: Edge of History: Season 1 (December 14)

Nicolas Cage’s unhinged, President-kidnapping, Declaration-of-Independence-stealing patriot sadly has (seemingly!) nothing to do with this fresh spin-off series. We get a double-episode premiere to introduce us to intrepid history buff Jess (Lisette Olivera), for whom historical knick-knacks are more than a hobby. A DREAMer, she’s keen to unlock the secrets of her history’s past in order to secure a safe and legal life in the US, and she’ll have to face off against black market antiquity dealers and presumably some pissed-off authorities to get it.

True Lies (December 30)

With his big blue franchise returning to cinemas in December, it might be time to revisit one of James Cameron’s few stand-alone action romps. Somehow, Jamie Lee Curtis doesn’t know that her mega-buff husband Arnold Schwarzenegger is really a spy, not a boring computer salesman. The truth about his double life will draw them into a double-crossing plot that actually spices up the muted romance they’ve been suffering through. And Bill Paxton is bloody hilarious as the lame car salesman Curtis plans an affair with.
