Fan Of The Festival: Director Stephen Kang – ‘Blue’
Stephen Kang is the director of short film Blue, winner of the Best Short Film at Critics’ Week, Cannes Film Festival 2011. It features an out-of-work children’s TV mascot struggling to find a new place in the world. It will be screening before sessions of Submarine. We asked Stephen a few hard-hitting questions…
——————–
FLICKS: Hello from Flicks! How are you and what have you been up to today?
KANG: All good. I’ve been writing down an idea and it’s been perfect weather to do it with a hot coffee.
FLICKS: Describe your most memorable cinema experience?
When I was in high school, my friend and I sat in the theatre waiting for the film to start. But nothing happened. We waited and waited. Nothing. Then I realised there’s only two of us in the theatre. I asked what’s going on and they thought there’s no-one in the theatre. They radioed the projectionist and film started. It was like a private screening.
FLICKS: What is your favourite film scene?
The synchronised singing scene in Magnolia. Backward train ride opening scene in Peppermint Candy. Song Kang-ho character beats up unconscious guy (for real!) in Sympathy for Mr.Vengeance. Ok I should stop now…
FLICKS: What is the last great film you saw?
I’ve just re-visted Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Great anti-hero film!
FLICKS: What are your two picks for the 2011 New Zealand International Film Festival?
Take Shelter which I stupidly missed at Cannes. And Pina…Wim Wenders, 3D, dance…interesting mix.
