Q&A With Director Ben Wheatley – ‘Kill List’

As part of the Incredibly Strange section, UK horror-thriller Kill List is described as shifting in from a kitchen sink melodrama to a funny buddy movie to an edge-of-your-seat horror film in its final reel. We asked director Ben Wheatley a few pertinent questions…

——————–

FLICKS: Hello from Flicks, how are you and what are you up to today?

WHEATLEY: Today I am editing a load of sound together on a new film. I’ve been cutting shotgun blasts and shrieking metal noises for the last three weeks. It’s a romantic comedy.

FLICKS: What should people expect from Kill List?

You should expect to be upset and visually assaulted. But in a good way.

FLICKS: What’s your favourite line of dialogue from Kill List?

My favourite line of dialogue in Kill List is when Jay (Neil Maskell) shrieks “I am going to bury my cat and you can fuck off out of my gaff”. It was an improvised line and Neil looks really demented when he says it. I don’t think there are enough scenes in modern movies where grown men are upset about cats.

FLICKS: Share your fondest memory from the set?

We shot a scene in a garage and after the first take we all knew that we had nailed it. The crew and cast were acting as one. We knew the rest of the film would be okay.

FLICKS: What was the last great film you saw?

Come and See by Elem Klimov. Devastating.

FLICKS: If you could work with any actor/actress living or dead, who would it be?

Lee Marvin. He was a leading MAN!

FLICKS: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Cut it to the bone.
