The best movies and shows coming to Netflix in November
Check out Claire White’s highlights of what’s coming to Netflix New Zealand soon, followed by the full release schedule.
Top Picks: TV
All the Light We Cannot See (November 2)
Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning historical novel, this series follows a blind French girl and a German soldier whose lives cross in occupied France during WWII. A novel praised for its lyrical and intricate prose, it will be interesting to see if these impressions translate on screen (however, WWII epics generally do). The likes of Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie pad the cast alongside German actor Louis Hofmann and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti.
The Crown: Season 6 Part 1 (November 16)
In its sixth and final season, Australia’s Elizabeth Debicki continues her phenomenal performance as Lady Diana in what has been a massive series tracking the life, history and trajectory of Queen Elizabeth the II and the English royal family. Part one is sure to build suspense as we near closer to Diana’s tragic death—part two, which will air in the new year, will focus on the young princes, particularly William and Kate meeting at university. As the series creeps closer to modern day, it makes sense that the buck has to stop somewhere. This being said, I have enjoyed myself, and am intrigued to see how this era will play out on screen.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (November 17)
Scott Pilgrim returns once again to defeat the seven evil exes of the cool and beautiful Ramona Flowers in this new anime adaptation of the beloved graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley and the 2010 film directed by Edgar Wright. Featuring the original cast of the film in returning roles, not only will the series be a fun little injection of nostalgia, but hopefully new fans will emerge, and Scott Pilgrim will live forever.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
The Killer (November 10)
In this new David Fincher neo-noir psycho-thriller, Michael Fassbender stars as a cool, methodical, and possibly psychotic hitman known only as “The Killer.” The film premiered to favourable reviews at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, as one of a handful of other films coincidentally also about hit men (Richard Linklater’s Hit Man was also picked up by Netflix in a $20 million deal). Although the plight of a man slowly losing his mind suits Fassbender, an appearance by Tilda Swinton steals the show.
Rustin (November 17)
Many will remember the 1963 March on Washington as a momentous demonstration for civil rights in America, tent-poled by Rev. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Yet not many know about Baynard Rustin, the activist who organised it all. Colman Domingo stars as Rustin, as the film follows his life, and the racism and homophobia he faced in the lead up to the historic event. Glynn Turman, Chris Rock, CCH Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald also join the cast.
The Family Switch (November 30)
An ill-timed visit to an astrologer lands the Walker family into chaos as they get Freaky-Friday’d, and the whole family do a body swap. The parents (Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms) now in their teenage kids’ bodies (Emma Myers and Brady Noon), each family member will have to learn what it’s like to live in each other’s shoes in order to restore balance to the world. This new family film is directed by McG (of Charlie’s Angels and The Babysitter duology’s fame) so who knows what will happen! Rita Moreno is also there.
