Abandoned, a baby is left at the doorstep of Father Bernard (Neeson) in Ireland in the 60s. Despite being raised by a strict foster mother and in a Catholic school, Patrick 'Kitten' Braden dons dresses and lipstick from an early age and embraces early manhood as a cheery young transvestite - in-built with a refusal to let others change who he is.
Patrick leaves home and falls in with a rock singer before leaving Ireland to look for his real mother. His nonchalant nature sees him float through a scrapbook of experiences, troubles and unconventional jobs in the politically charged, swinging 60s/70s London. Director Jordan (famous for THAT scene in 'The Crying Game') depicts the story in a fanciful, surreal fashion.
