Russian, black and white, indecipherable sci-fi epic with a running time of almost three hours. Master director Aleksei German died before completing the film – having spent over 13 years in production – leaving it to his longtime partner Scetlana Karmalita and son Aleksei German Jr to finish the feature. Based on the Strugatskiy brothers’ 1964 novel of the same name.
The anticipated final film from German reached near-mythological status long before it was ever completed. While relatively unknown outside of Russia, German is regarded as a filmmaker of import second only to Tarkovsky in his motherland.
