A Minecraft Movie: New Zealand trailer and release date

Well, it’s been literally a decade in the making, plans having first been sketched out all the way back in 2014, but the long-awaited big screen adaptation of perennially popular (but largely impenetrable, to our aged eyes) computer game Minecraft is finally becoming a real thing, with a first look trailer now out in the wild.

When is A Minecraft Movie being released in New Zealand?

A Minecraft Movie hits New Zealand cinemas on April 3, 2025.

What is A Minecraft Movie about?

Blocks, I think.

Hard data is thin on the ground, but according to the official synopsis, A Minecraft Movie sees four ordinary workaday folks get sucked through some kind of interdimensional portal thingamajig and into a strange realm seemingly made of blocks (which reminds us of a another movie, come to think of it). This is the Overworld, and there our heroes must learn to master their imaginations, battle evil Piglins and zombies, and go on a magical quest, all under the tutelage of expert crafterand not, we must stress, master builderSteve.

This one is coming to us from director Jared Hess, who previously gave us Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, and… not much else you need to worry about, although Gentlemen Broncos has its moments.

The cast of A Minecraft Movie

We have jolly giant Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison; Emma Myers as Natalie; Danielle Brooks as Dawn; Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry; and the formerly beloved craven sell-out Jack Black as Steve. Plus there’s Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, Jemaine Clement, and Matt Berry in roles whose exact nature is shrouded in mystery.

Why we’re excited about A Minecraft Movie

Hmm. Well, look, maybe, but so far this feels pretty generic to us. Which is perhaps fine for the kids, no argument there, but we’ll have to see more before we can drum up much enthusiasm. Still, Minecraft the game is critically acclaimed and wildly popular, so it’d be nice if the movie got within a parsec of that.
