Christchurch Cinemas Take Industry Awards
Christchurch’s movie-goers have shown their love, with Alice Cinematheque and Reading The Palms cinemas winning the People’s Choice Best Cinema awards at the official awards of the NZ motion picture industry.
The New Zealand Motion Picture Industry (NZMPIC) awards take place at the end of each year’s industry conference, and are decided by public vote (right here on Flicks).
The 38-seat, boutque Alice Cinematheque (pictured above), winner of Best Independent Cinema, opened in 2012 as an extension of the CBD’s legendary Alice in Videoland store. It was the first cinema to open in central Canterbury after the 2010 earthquakes.
Managing Director Jeremy Stewart says, “Alice is humble and delighted to win the People’s Choice Award. With such great local and national competition, we are thrilled to have so much public support”.
The Palms multiplex won for Best “Mainstream” Cinema, the third year in a row it’s taken the prize.
Meanwhile, Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows won the People’s Choice award for Best New Zealand Film, and Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel won for Best Film.
