Doctor Who (2024) season two: New Zealand trailer and release date

The world’s most beloved science fiction TV series returns, as a whole new season arrives in the not too distant future.

How to watch Doctor Who season 2 in New Zealand

Doctor Who season two is streaming in New Zealand exclusively on Disney+ from April 12, 2025. Or maybe it’s the 15th series. Or the 41st. It’s all a bit timey-wimey.

What is Doctor Who season 2 about?

C’mon, you know this one. The renegade Time Lord known only as The Doctor, a sort-of immortal humanoid-looking alien from the planet Gallifrey. He travels through time and space in a vehicle called the TARDIS (that’s Time and Relative Dimension in Space, propeller-heads) that always looks like a UK police call box, battling aliens and saving the universe on the reg, generally with a human companion or two in tow because, well, the Doctor has a kind of paternalistic fondness for humanity.

First airing on the BBC all the way back in 1963, Doctor Who is arguably the world’s most popular sci-fi series. And now that Disney has the rights, even the yanks are starting to come around to the idea that, yes, it even beats Star Trek.

The cast of Doctor Who season 2

Ncuti Gatwa is the Doctor, the 15th incarnation of the character (but even that’s debatable….series continuity is a nightmare); Millie Gibson is current companion Ruby Wednesday; and Varada Sethu is new companion Belinda Chandra. Other than that, you never know who might turn up.

Why we’re excited about Doctor Who season 2

I mean, who isn’t? Doctor Who is a foundational element of both science fiction as a genre, and television as a format by this stage of the game. Sure, we’ve had a few wobbles over the years in terms of quality, but even that’s subjective (and we refuse to be drawn on showrunner drama—get out and touch grass, FFS). We’re always up for another trip in the TARDIS, and we always will be.
