Frank Zappa & Sharon Jones Sneak Into 5 More NZIFF Announcements

The New Zealand International Film Festival just cannot stop announcing more goodness in their 2016 programme. This time, we’re gifted with five music movies that feature a wide range of subjects from the great Sharon Jones to the auditioning process of an Australian boy’s choir.


Miss Sharon Jones!

Two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple (American Dream) follows richly talented R&B singer Sharon Jones as she attempts to ward of pancreatic cancer and reignite her dominant singing career.

Miss Sharon Jones! will play in all NZIFF centres.


Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words

Documentary on Frank Zappa, the iconic and philosophical rock star who found his musical identity by not falling in line with ‘the system’ or anyone’s expectations.

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words will be playing in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton and Palmerston North.


Argentina

Veteran Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura (Tango) adds another dance feature to his portfolio with this showcase of top-tier Argentinian folklore performers

Argentina will be screened in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.


The Music of Strangers

The filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom captures a globe-spanning experiment started by cellist Yo-Yo Ma where a diverse range of cultures put their musical sensibilities together to make something new.

Music of Strangers will play in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson, Dunedin, Hamilton and Palmerston North.


Wide Open Sky

Australian documentary that chronicles the day-to-day running of a non-profit children’s choir group in rural New South Wales.

Wide Open Sky will play in all NZIFF centres.


The full NZIFF programme will be available from Tuesday 21 June for Auckland, and Friday 24 June for Wellington.  NZIFF 2016 dates are:

Wellington 22 July – 7 August

Christchurch 28 July – 14 August

Dunedin 4 – 21 August
