How to watch Batman: Caped Crusader in New Zealand

The best Batman stories centre the grouchy emo hero’s detective work, so this brand new animated series is onto something clever by turning back the clock to show a more retro Gotham. The cast is pretty spiffy, too.

When is Batman: Caped Crusader being released in New Zealand?

Batman: Caped Crusader is now streaming in New Zealand on Prime Video.

What is Batman: Caped Crusader about?

A reimagining of the big black Bat detective’s early days; Batman Begins, again. Drawing inspiration from Bat-tales of the 1940s and 50s, the show depicts Bruce Wayne’s beginnings in Gotham crime-fighting, before the benevolent Commissioner Jim Gordon was able to step in and help out a tad. More grounded than some other, more fantastic adaptations, it’ll show our scowling hero dealing with corrupt cops and the suspicious public just as much as his classic rogues gallery of evil weirdos (but don’t worry, they’re around to cause trouble too).

The cast of Batman: Caped Crusader

Hamish Linklater voices Bruce Wayne and Batman; Jason Watkins is best butler ever Alfred Pennyworth; Eric Morgan Stuart and Krystal Joy Brown are Jim Gordon and his daughter Barbara; and voice acting legend John DiMaggio plays corrupt police chief Harvey Bullock.

Ready for the baddies? Of course you are. Christina Ricci is Catwoman; Diedrich Bader is Two-Face; Jamie Chung is Harley Quinn; Spongebob himself Tom Kenny is Firebug; and most excitingly, Minnie Driver is Oswalda Cobblepot…a gender-flipped version of the Penguin.

Why we’re excited for Batman: Caped Crusader

Because Bruce Timm, the brains behind the best animated Batman series of the 1990s, is acting as showrunner. The animation here looks pretty much the same as those exciting episodes from our childhoods, but with an updated voice cast and film noir vibes as a fresh lacquer of (black) paint. Only problem is, the first season runs a quick 10 episodes. More pls!
