Why we’re excited about Beckham
It seems that not a week goes by without a new documentary dropping about one sporting champion or another and their rise to pre-eminence, but while the bulk of them are exercises in hagiography and brand management, a deep dive into David Beckham is certainly intriguing. He broke the banks of football fandom to become world famous very early on, in no small part thanks to his marriage to Posh Spice, and a look at how that sudden celebrity affected him should be fascinating. Plus, Fisher Stevens is a genuinely great documentarian, having helmed Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and scoring an Oscar for dolphin slaughter exposé The Cove, so we’re expecting this one to be a cut above the usual standard.
