How to watch Dog Man in New Zealand

Not to be confused with the recent Luc Besson crime flick (that’s Dogman) or the plethora of dubious documentaries and cheapo horror movies about the similarly-named cryptid (dear lord, don’t make that mistake), this Dog Man is a new kids’ flick from the creators of the wildly popular (and surprisingly decent) Captain Underpants franchise.

How to watch Dog Man in New Zealand

Dog Man is screening in New Zealand cinemas from April 10, 2025.

What is Dog Man about?

Based on Dav Pilkey’s eponymous children’s graphic novel series and following on from 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Dog Man follows the adventures of the titular canine cop, who was created when police officer Knight and his dog Greg were injured in an explosion, forcing surgeons to sew Greg’s head onto Knight’s body (reading between the lines, it seems that Knight’s consciousness was not retained, but we doubt the movie delves into that. This isn’t The Fly, after all).

Thereafter, he protects Ohkay City from his nemesis Petey, “the world’s most evilest cat”. It’s all nonsense, but it’s weirdly clever nonsense.

The cast of Dog Man

Pretty killer voice cast here, with Peter Hastings as the voice (well, barks—he can’t talk) of Dog Man and his human and canine antecedents; Pete Davidson as Petey, his feline archenemy; Lucas Hopkins Calderon as Li’l Petey, his kitten sidekick; Lil Rel Howery as Chief, the local top cop; Isla Fisher as news reporter Sarah Hatoff; Billy Boyd as Seamus, her cameraman; Ricky Gervais as Flippy the Fish; Stephen Root as Grampa, Petey’s dad; Poppy Liu as Butler, Petey’s assistant; Cheri Oteri as the Mayor of Ohkay City; plus Kate Micucci, Melissa Villaseñor, Brian Hopkins, and Yung Gravy in various supporting roles.

Why we’re excited about Dog Man

All I know is my mate’s 10-year-old is champing at the bit for this one. And hey, Mark Kermode liked it.
