From the director of Werewolves Within and the writers behind Freaky comes this slasher rom-com that seems to have snuck in under the radar a bit.
How to watch Heart Eyes in New Zealand
Heart Eyes is slicing its way into New Zealand cinemas from February 13, 2025, which is a nice bit of Valentines Day counter-programming.
Heart Eyes
What is Heart Eyes about?
We find ourselves in the middle of a holiday-themed killing spree as the Heart Eyes Killer (HEK to his mates), who has butchered a bunch of loved up couples in a different city every Valentines Day for the past few years, sets up shop in Seattle and sets to choppin’. In his sights are, among others, recently single fashionista Ally, who has just had a meet cute with fashion designer Jay Simmons. But this is very much a horror comedy, which makes sense coming from director Josh Ruben and screenwriters, Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy.
The cast of Heart Eyes
Olivia Holt is on Final Girl duties as Ally; Mason Gooding is Jay Simmons; Gigi Zumbado as Monica, Ally’s bestie; Michaela Watkins is Crystal, Ally and Jay’s employer; ’90s horror icons Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster are Detective Hobbs and Detective Shaw, who are investigating the murders, and surely those character names aren’t coincidental; Latham Gaines is Nico; and Chris Parker is Tommy (and at a guess they’re on board to fill out the body count).

Why we’re excited about Heart Eyes
Well, we’ve had zombie rom-coms so why not a slasher rom-com? The creative team are dab hands at the old horror-comedy mash-up business, and the whole thing looks light, breezy, and bloody. Whether ol’ Heart Eyes joins the hallowed ranks of inconic slasher villains like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers remains to be seen, though.
