How to watch Joker: Folie à Deux in New Zealand

Joaquin Phoenix returns as the Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips dark, prickly take on the legendary Batman villain. And this time he’s bringing Lady Gaga with him.

When is Joker: Folie à Deux being released in New Zealand?

Joker: Folie à Deux is currently playing in New Zealand cinemas, and will be available to rent/buy from November 4, 2024.

What is Joker: Folie à Deux about?

Two years after the events of Joker, out deranged protagonist is banged up in Arkham Asylum, where he finds a kind of destructive infatuation with fellow inmate Harleen Quinzel. Their burgeoning romance and shared insanity is communicated through the medium of song, because Joker: Folie à Deux is, among other things, a musical. It’s also a courtroom drama, as Arthur goes on trial for all those murders he committed, with district attorney Harvey Dent milking the high profile case for all the publicity and political clout he can.

The cast of Joker: Folie à Deux

Joaquin Phoenix is Arthur Fleck aka Joker; Lady Gaga is Harleen “Lee” Quinzel/Harley Quinn, and apparently markedly different to other iterations of the character;  Catherine Keener is Maryanne Stewart, Arthur’s lawyer; Zazie Beetz returns as Sophie Dumond, Arthur’s former neighbour; Harry Lawtey is district attorney Harvey Dent, who we know eventually becomes Two-Face, although how that’s handled here, if at all, is anyone’s guess; Steve Coogan is TV host Paddy Meyers; and Leigh Gill, Sharon Washington, Jacob Lofland, Ken Leung and Bill Smitrovich round out the cast.

Why we’re excited about Joker: Folie à Deux

Well, as we could have predicted, critical reviews have been extremely mixed following Joker: Folie à Deux‘s  debut at the Venice International Film Festival in September. It’s either a subversive work of brilliant misanthropy, or an interminable slog that wastes the talents of all involved. This might be one you need to judge for yourself.
