When is Kaos being released in New Zealand?
The first season (hopefully) of Kaos is now streaming in New Zealand exclusively on Netflix, with all eight episodes available—a veritable bacchanalian feast of fun.

What is Kaos about?
Cut from the same cloth as the old Vertigo comic Greek Street (ask a Gen-Xer in a Cure t-shirt) and echoing similar fare such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Kaos retells ancient Greek myths in a modern paradigm, chronicling the…uh…chaos that ensues when the narcissistic Zeus (our man Jeff) realises he’s ageing, which may foretell the end of the world—or at least his reign. Which is just as bad from his perspective.
As Zeus panics, three mortals are caught up in the pantheon’s labyrinthine plotting: Ari, daughter of President Minos, Riddy, the girlfriend of pop idol Orpheus; and Caenaeus, a trans man toiling in a dead end job in the literal Underworld. Can the three dodge Zeus’ fury? Only narrator Prometheus, Zeus’ former BFF/current nemesis, knows for sure.

We don’t have enough pins and string to map out all the relationship dynamics, the Greek myths being the OG soap opera. But we look forward to Goldblum as Zeus, Aurora Perrineau as Riddy, Misia Butler as Caenis, Leila Farzad as Ari, Janet McTeer as Hera, Cliff Curtis as Poseidon, David Thewlis as Hades, Killian Scott as Orpheus, Debi Mazar as Medusa, and Stephen Dillane as Prometheus. Plus there’s Nabhaan Rizwan, Mat Fraser, Rakie Ayola, Stanley Townsend, Billie Piper, Eddie Izzard, and Fady Elsayed as various gods, mortals, monsters, and whatnot.

Why we’re excited about Kaos
Greek mythology refracted through a modern lens is certainly a tantalising concept, and reminds us of the old early 2000s series Kings, which did the same thing, more or less, for a good chunk of the Old Testament (don’t worry if you don’t remember it…nobody does). But the main takeaway here is I spent an extra hour on this piece riddling it with mythology puns, and I hope you appreciate the effort.
