What is Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words about?
Well, it’s in the title, isn’t it? Born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, the Texan freestyler broke through spectacularly in 2019 with the single “Big Ole Freak” after building up a following on social media. 2020 well and truly put her on the map thanks to high profile collabs with Beyoncé and, notably and somewhat controversially, Cardi B (the conservative apoplexy over “WAP” was pretty funny, let’s face it).
Now she’s one of the biggest stars in the world, but there’s been plenty of controversy and drama along the way, not least of which is that time she got shot by rapper Tory Lanez (currently serving a 10 year stretch for the crime). So there’s a lot of grist for director Nneka Onuorah (The Same Difference, Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls), who employs a fly-on-the-wall cinema verité approach to capture the real Stallion, and also anime inserts, because Megan’s a big fan.

Why we’re excited about Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words
Look, personally this whole “intimate look at the stars” doco format is getting a bit stale. The form has become stagnant: we know they’re carefully stage-managed to present a chosen persona, and what negative elements that are on display are carefully chosen not to put the subject in too damning a light. But, here’s the counterpoint: Megan Thee Stallion is a genuine phenomenon, a huge talent with a knack for ticking off the insufferable. She even managed to do a Queen cover we don’t hate. So we’ll be cueing this one up.
