How to watch Muted in New Zealand
Six years after he hurled his parents to their deaths from their apartment balcony, a troubled young man is the subject of an experimental effort to discover why he committed such a horrific act. That’s the hook for the new six part Spanish drama Muted, which is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
Set in Bilbao, Spain, Muted is a creepy psychological thriller that stars Arón Piper as Sergio Ciscar, the aforementioned “Balcony Killer”, who is paroled after not saying a single word for entire length if his incarceration. He returns to his family home—also the site of his crime, don’t forget—but, unbeknownst to him, psychiatrist Ana Dussuel (Almudena Amor) and her team have rigged the place with a ton of hidden cameras, the idea being they’ll gather enough data observing Sergio unawares, and thus crack the mystery.
Subinspector Cabrera (Aitor Luna), the police officer assigned to keep an eye on the experiment, remains dubious. But is he actively sabotaging the program? And if so, why and for who?
As for Ana, she’s in love with Sergio. But so too is Marta (Cristina Kovani), his prison pen pal. So why is she working with the police? And what’s the deal with Sergio’s court-mandated pastor Natanael (Ramiro Blas), who gives off serious “ex-criminal” vibes? It’s mystery upon mystery in Muted, a twisty drama created by Aitor Gabilondo (Wrong Side of the Tracks). We’re very much in murky noir territory with this one. Muted is a story where everyone has a secret, and the series takes its time revealing them.
While Sergio’s motive for murdering his parents is the central hook, Muted has bigger things up its sleeve, hinting at dark conspiracies working behind the scenes for now-unknowable purposes. Dark, sexy and cerebral, Muted is sure to please fans of the seamier side.
