Running Point season one is now streaming on Netflix, with all ten episodes dropping at once.

What is Running Point season one about?

Created by absolute comedy gun Mindy Kaling, who’s co-writing with Ike Barinholz and showrunner David Stassen, Running Point sees Hudson as Isla Gordon, a high-powered, high-achieving executive who suddenly finds herself taking up the reins of the Los Angeles Waves basketball team after her brother drops the ball in a spectacular and very public fashion. But the b-ball court and the boardroom are very different environments. Can Isla win the respect of both the players and the off-court team? Look, probably. The Waves may be a fictional team, but the series is inspired by real-world glass-ceiling-shatterer Jeanie Buss, president and co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, who is on board as an executive producer.

The cast of Running Point season one

Kate Hudson is Isla Gordon; Drew Tarver is brother Sandy Gordon; Scott MacArthur is third sibling Ness Gordon; Max Greenfield is supportive fiancé Lev Levy; Brenda Song is hard-nosed general manager Ali Lee; Jay Ellis is legendary coach Jay Brown; Toby Sandeman is star player Marcus Winfield; Chet Hanks is player and wannabe rapper Travis Bugg, which sounds about right; with Fabrizio Guido, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Dane DiLiegro, Scott Evans, Roberto Sanchez, and Uche Agada rounding out the squad.

Why we’re excited about Running Point season one

Kate Hudson is always welcome on our screens, Kaling is funny as all hell, and pro basketball is a milieu ripe with comedic potential. The whole thing reminds us more than a little bit of the 1986 Goldie Hawn (that’s Kate’s mum) vehicle Wildcats, which saw the charismatic comedy legend become coach to a struggling NFL team (and also paired Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes on screen for the first time, albeit a fair way down the cast list).
