How to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in New Zealand

Well, here’s a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Make of that what you will.

How to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in New Zealand

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 speeds into New Zealand cinemas on December 26.

What is  Sonic the Hedgehog 3 about?

Following the cataclysmic events of the first two films (well, presumably cataclysmic—didn’t watch ’em, not gonna) Team Sonic must face the emergent dual threat of Shadow the Hedgehog, a vengeance-crazed “evil” version of Sonic, and Doctor Robotnik’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. That’s pretty much it.

The cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3

On the animated end of the casting spectrum we have Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog; veterean voice performer Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Sonic’s fox sidekick; Idris Elba as tough nut Knuckles the Echidna; and none other than Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, which makes this the second time that Reeves and Elba have voiced characters in the same franchise—Cyberpunk 2077 being the first.

On the human side we have Jim Carrey leaving it all out on the field in the dual roles Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather and Shadow’s creator; James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, the adoptive parents of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles; Krysten Ritter as high-ranking officer/narrative roadblock Director Rockwell of the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.); and Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Maddie’s sister. Plus there’s Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Doctor Robotnik’s henpucked henchman; Tom Butler as Commander Walters, the leader of G.U.N.; and Adam Pally as hapless deputy sheriff Wade Whipple.

Why we’re excited about Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Look, these flicks are absolute nothingburgers for adults, but the kids dig ’em, and that’s good enough (source: my nephew, age 10). But it is something to see Jim Carrey going farther and wilder than any other human actor in the whole enterprise, so that should keep your eyes open. For real: Carrey rules.
