How to watch The Acolyte season 1 in New Zealand

And so it’s time we returned to that long, long ago, far, far away galaxy for another dose of Star Wars action. But this one’s a bit different.

How to watch The Acolyte season 1 in New Zealand

The Acolyte season 1 is now streaming in New Zealand exclusively on Disney+, with the first two of six chapters already up, and new episodes dropping weekly.

What is The Acolyte about?

Set at the tail end of Star Wars‘ High Republic era (AKA the good old days), the series sees the galaxy rocked by the murder of a respected and powerful Jedi Master. Former Padawan Osha, who left the order for personal reasons, is suspect number one and soon finds herself a fugitive, trying to find the real culprit. Could it have anything to do with her twin sister Mae, who supposedly died in childhood? Look, most likely.

So, it’s a murder mystery/wrong man scenario, but in Star Wars—sounds good to us. It also seems to delve into the origin of that whole Light Side/Dark Side dichotomy, which promises to be both interesting and, for a certain subset of the fandom, absolutely enraging.

The cast of The Acolyte

Amandla Stenberg is Osha and Mae; Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae is Jedi Master Sol, Osha’s old mentor; Logan‘s Dafne Keen is Jecki Lon, Sol’s current Padawan apprentice; Charlie Barnett is strait-laced Jedi guardian Yord Fandar; Rebecca Henderson is senior Jedi Vernestra Rwoh; Jodie Turner-Smith is force witch Mother Aniseya; The Good Place‘s Manny Jacinto is retired smuggler Qimir; Carrie-Anne Moss is Jedi Master Indara; and the rather typecast and towering Joonas Suotamo is Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi. I’ve never written the word “Jedi” so much in one day.

Why we’re excited about The Acolyte

We’ll always show up for Star Wars, but this one is particularly intriguing, as it seems to have shorn off most of the detritus of continuity that has accreted around both the Skywalker Saga and Dave Filoni’s small screen efforts. That alone makes it worth a look-in: add in a top notch cast and a compelling hook, and we are well and truly on board.
