This March, it was announced that the forthcoming fifth season of medical drama New Amsterdam would be the show’s last, finally wrapping up the romantic and workplace drama of hopeful new director Doctor Max Goodwin.
And TBH? These poor docs deserve a break, after a COVID pandemic forced the show to surrender its PPE costumes and a typhoon rattled New Amsterdam hospital in season four’s finale! Finish off your feels when New Amsterdam season 5 premieres on NEON from September 21, playing out as a slightly shorter season of 13 episodes.
A trailer for the fifth and final season has not been released yet, so you can relive all the last season’s chaos and cuteness in the promo video below instead. Fans of the show were stoked that the much-shipped Max and Doctor Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) finally consummated their long-brewing romance, but there was of course plenty of heartache to go around too.
Namely, that pesky aforementioned typhoon ripping through the hospital. And then Helen went and left him at the altar, just to drive all the sadness home.
That makes Max’s promise of a “new beginning filled with joy” in the teaser below somewhat ironic, with guest stars such as Frankie Muniz going through a whole lot of tragedy with the facility’s usual deaths, births, and catastrophic diagnoses.
All of New Amsterdam‘s viewers have had to spend time in hospitals at some point in their lives, so it can be immensely comforting to watch a show like this: somewhat cheesy storylines of loveable characters dealing with worst case scenarios, and always coming out the other side stronger and more grateful.
The tagline on posters of this final season is “take care, always”, suggesting that the hospital’s people-first stories will continue long after the series finale has dropped. Hopefully Shipwin (the couple name for the show’s biggest romantic pairing) will also get to enjoy a long life together once those final credits roll…
