What is The Last of Us season 2 about?

Based on the wildly acclaimed video game franchise, The Last of Us is set some two decades after a weird fungal pandemic has caused the near complete collapse of society, mainly because the disease’s most obvious and pressing effect is turning people into the aforementioned mushroom zombies.
Grizzled survivor Joel is tasked with smuggling Ellie, a young girl, across the former United States, as her seeming immunity to the infection could lead to a cure. Things don’t go too smoothly, though, and without giving away too much, this new season picks up five years after the season one finale, with things frosty between our heroes due to preceding events.
