What is Wicked Little Letters about?
Set in the quaint English seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s and based on a true story, Wicked Little Letters (you have no idea how often I’ve accidentally typed Pretty Little Liars) sees the community rocked by a series of anonymous obscene letters that circulate through the village. Suspicion falls on recent Irish immigrant Rose Gooding, who’s a bit foul-mouthed, likes a drink or three, and she finds herself the target of a campaign spearheaded by the priggish Edith Swan.
It all goes to court, with Rose at risk of losing not only her freedom, but her daughter. This one comes to us from director Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) and screenwriter and comedian Jonny Sweet, who’s making his feature writing debut.
The cast of Wicked Little Letters
Jessie Buckley, who scooped up a Best Supporting Actress nomination for The Lost Daughter, is Rose; Olivia Colman, who won Best Actress for The Favourite, is Edith; Timothy Spall and Gemma Jones are Edith’s controlling parents; Alisha Weir, who took the lead in Matilda: the Musical, is Rose’s daughter, Nancy; Anjana Vasan of We Are Lady Parts is PC Gladys Moss, who twigs that this whole thing seems like a beat up; while the supporting cast includes Malachi Kirby, Joanna Scanlan, and Hugh Skinner.

Why we’re excited about Wicked Little Letters
Putting aside the fact that swearing is both big and clever, and the sight of two stupendous actresses tearing strips off each other is sure to be fun, Wicked Little Letters delves into themes of class, gender, and liberation, which we are all about.
