How to watch X-Men ’97 in New Zealand
A lot of people got their first taste of Marvel mutant mayhem with the old X-Men animated series that ran between 1993 and 1997. And those people are going to be feeling old as hell when this brand spankin’ new follow up hits screens.
When is X-Men ’97 being released in New Zealand?
X-Men ’97 is screening in New Zealand exclusively on Disney+ from March 20.
What is X-Men ’97 about?
Frankly, it’d be pretty insane if anyone reading this didn’t have some inkling of the whole X-Men dealio, but just in case: telepath Professor X runs a school for gifted students, which is actually a cover for his covert superhero team the X-Men, a gaggle of mutants sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them. The whole thing is a parable for any civil rights issue you care to mention, plus there’s a guy with laser eyes.
This 10 part sequel series picks up where the original left off, with the aforementioned laser eye guy, Cyclops, leading the X-Men in the wake of Xavier’s death (he’ll probably come back).
The cast of X-Men ’97
A lot of the voice actors who worked on the original series are back in the saddle, with Cal Dodd, Alison Sealy-Smith, Lenore Zann, and George Buza reprising the roles of Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, and Beast, respectively. They’re joined by newcomers Ray Chase, J.P. Karliak, A.J. LoCascio and Isaac Robinson-Smith as Cyclops, Morph, Gambit, and Bishop.

Why we’re excited about X-Men ’97
With Marvel’s mutants seemingly about to join the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe via the unlikely conduit of Deadpool and Wolverine, there’s not better time to revisit the most angst-ridden corner of the Marvel Universe and bask in its earnest, bombastic glory. The original cartoon clearly left an indelible mark on the kids who saw it back in the day, and that now-adult audience is sure to be tuning in.
