Iron Man 3 Breaks Box Office Records with Massive Opening Weekend
The third Iron Man movie, directed by Shane Black and the first Marvel film to follow last year’s The Avengers, looks set to become the year’s first box office juggernaut. Opening last week in all major territories except the US, it grossed $US198.4 million over the weekend – that’s $US13 million more than The Avengers over the same opening period.
In New Zealand it easily became 2013’s highest opener (beating Life of Pi‘s 4-day debut by $NZ1.4 million), and also had the 6th highest opening in NZ box office history (see both Top 10s below).
The opening is the 9th highest international debut of all-time according to boxofficemojo.com and with US audiences still to see it (it opens there on Thursday) expect further records to tumble.
