James Cameron responds to Avatar sequels criticism by announcing 4 Titanic sequels
UPDATE: This was an April fools joke which, according to the responses on Facebook, fooled no-one. Thank goodness for that.
Filmmaking giant James Cameron made box office history with Oscar-winning blockbuster sci-fi Avatar, which was the highest grossing film ever (before the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens). A sequel seemed inevitable.
However, the announcement of four sequels—a decade after the original’s release—has copped criticism from a number of reputable media sources.
YouTuber PoorFlails explained in this video essay: “The move resembles the peak of Hollywood arrogance.”
Twitter user @SirLoafLop argued in a 16-tweet thread: “Have we learned nothing from The Matrix, The Hobbit, and every other too-late cash-grab sequels? #AvatarSequels”
On Instagram, @SofaRollPi held up a message she wrote on a Subway napkin that read: “Shame on you, James Cameron. How dare you make more films based on a movie that made heaps of money. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!?”
In an interview with I Proofs All media, Cameron responded to the criticism: “I understand that a small minority of people are upset with the decision to make four more Avatar sequels. Today, I hope to ease tensions by putting four Titanic sequels into immediate pre-production.”
