M3GAN 2.0: New Zealand trailer and release date

Everyone’s favourite tween machine returns to dish out more mechanical mayhem—and this time she’s got a little competish.

When is M3GAN 2.0 being released in New Zealand?

M3GAN 2.0 is being released in New Zealand cinemas on June 26, 2025.

What is M3GAN 2.0 about?

Robot on robot action!

Okay, that sounded a little weird, but hear me out: a couple years after the events of the first film, the technology underpinning psychotic artificial kid companion M3GAN has been used by a shady defence contractor to create a spy-droid named Amelia. Wouldn’t you know it, Amelia goes mental and decides that AI should rule the world, prompting roboticist-turned-anti-AI-activist Gemma, M3GAN’s creator, to pull the pint-sized, piston-driven powerhouse out of mothballs, upgrade her, and sic her on Amelia. So it’s a bit like Terminator 2, if you squint a bit.

The cast of M3GAN 2.0

Allison Williams (Girls, Fellow Travelers) returns as Gemma. As do Violet McGraw (Ready Player One, The Haunting of Hill House) as Cady, her niece; Amie Donald (Sweet Tooth) as M3GAN; Jenna Davis (Lisa Frankenstein) as the voice of M3GAN; the apparently Teflon-coated Brian Jordan Alvarez as Cole; and Jen Van Epps as Tess. New to the nascent franchise are Ivanna Sakhno (Pacific Rim: Uprising) as Amelia, plus Timm Sharp (the criminally underseen Undeclared), Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live), and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords) in undisclosed roles.

Why we’re excited about M3GAN 2.0

Well, the original M3GAN was good fun—a perfect slice of pop horror for the Friday night crowd. Director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper are back on board, and the notion of the titular kidbot as villain protagonist is intriguing. Let’s hope it manages to recapture the fun of the first iteration without just being more of the same. And let’s hope we get a new dance for the Tiktok kids to obsess over.
