Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s comedy video website Funny or Die is slapping their name on Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, as reported by a reporter from The Hollywood Reporter. Hopefully this won’t stretch the name to near preposterous levels (Funny or Die Presents: What We Do in the Shadows), it’s a great score for the Kiwi comedy filmmaking duo whose film is killing it with both audiences and critics (like this guy, this guy and this guy).
Other Sundance Reviews
The Sundance Film Festival has been kicking it in full gear with a batch of bold features stamping their significance as must-sees of 2014. Making his idiosyncratic voice known once again is filmmaker Richard Linklater (Before Midnight) with his coming-of-age drama Boyhood, shot annually over a course of 11 years. Praise has been excitingly high for this one, scoring five stars with The Guardian and Collider naming it “A miracle… truly unique… a masterpiece.”
Calvary, John Michael McDonagh’s follow-up to The Guard, stars the great Brendan Gleeson once again, this time as a priest who has been targeted for murder in a week’s time. The film made our Top 5 Most Anticipated Films of 2014 and critical word has been high. “Calvary boasts a sharp sense of place and a deep love of language,” says The Guardian “It’s puckish and playful, mercurial and clever, rattling with gallows laughter as it paints a portrait of an Irish community that is at once intimate and alienated.”
Landing with more of a thud is Life After Beth, a break-up zom-rom-com starring Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as a young, desperate lad trying to mend a broken relationship when his ex-girlfriend (Aubrey Plaza) returns to him as a zombie. According to /Film, “it wastes a great comic cast with comedy that is as sloppy as splattered brains.” Bummer.
