Check out the full list of 2020’s Oscar nominees
The nominees for the 2020 Academy Awards have been announced and Todd Phillips’ Joker leads the pack with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Director and Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.
Sam Mendes’ 1917, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are hot on its heels with 10 nominations each including Best Picture and Director.
The fairly unsurprising attention given to proven Oscar veteran filmmakers unfortunately pushed women largely out of the running. Greta Gerwig missed a second shot at the directing title for Little Women while Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood only got one nom for Academy darling Tom Hanks’ performance. As for Lorene Scafaria’s standout hit Hustlers and Lulu Wang’s Golden Globe winner The Farewell, they ended up with lemons.
However, there are plenty of nifty surprises from this list of nominees. South Korea’s Parasite, Flicks’ favourite film of 2019, landed itself 6 nominations including Best Picture and Director—a feat that doesn’t come around too often for foreign language films. Netflix animated titles Klaus and I Lost My Body both scored a nomination for Best Animated Feature while Frozen II got only a single nomination for its song Into the Unknown.
The Academy Awards ceremony will screen and stream live in Aotearoa via TVNZ Duke 10 February.
