Oscar Tipping Poll Results – and Congratulations to the Winner!

In a hard-fought battle to win the bragging rights that come with becoming the Oscar-Tipping Champion of New Zealand, the tightly-contested race  ended up in an eight-way tie. 2016 may have been considered a predictable year, yet no entrant got a perfect score of 24 correct answers out of 24 categories. Nor 23, 22, etc.

The eight brainiacs at the top of the leaderboard each made 18 correct picks, so we called in the official scrutineers at PricewaterhouseCoopers to walk us through the next step.

First, they said, we needed to kick out Flicks Editor Steve Newall and contributor Daniel Rutledge from competition [note that no-one else in our organisation complained too loudly about this]. Next, using a random number generator, we picked a winner from the remaining six qualifiers.

And the winner is…

Randi Shaffer!

We congratulate you on this stunning achievement, and will contact you soon to arrange the production of this custom, one-of-a-kind t-shirt to prove your credentials for ever more:

It’s appropriate to also commend the other entrants who displayed the same exquisite judgement as Randi, but just missed out on the top honours by a hare’s whisker. It’s no comfort, we’re sure, but like the most Oscar-worthy film of all time proclaims:

With that in mind, please join us in a round of applause for all of the top entrants in this year’s tipping comp:

Before wrapping up, here are some interesting stats on this year’s tips. As the graphic below says, here are the most unpredicatable winners – calculated by the percentage of correct entries:

See you on the red carpet next year!
