Outdoor Summer Cinema Events in Auckland: Where and When

Outdoor cinemas are about to spring up on Auckland for the Kiwi Summer days ahead, and we know exactly where and when to find them.

Movies in the Park

Auckland Council’s Movies in the Park begin this Friday night (January 15th) with Jurassic World in Takapuna before bringing more free screenings of different movies all around the city through to March. This includes the criminally underrated Penguins of Madagascar movie at David Lange Park in Mangere (22 Jan), ’70s classic Grease at Tahaki Reserve in Mt. Eden (12 Feb), the unbearably adorable Paddington at Central Park in Papakura (27 Feb) and heaps more.

Silo Cinema

Silo Cinema also continues its run of screenings this Friday night with The Devil Wears Prada, a double feature of The Endless Summer and The Endless Summer II (Jan 22) followed by 1993’s The Secret Garden (Jan 29) which was selected by Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

Ben and Jerry’s OpenAir Cinemas

The brand new Ben and Jerry’s OpenAir Cinemas in Western Springs Quarry is also gaining quite a bit of attention (Star Wars and free ice cream will do that). Kicking off with The Force Awakens on Feb 5 followed by Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur Feb 6, the screening schedule is riddled with quality recent releases such as Joy, Brooklyn, The Big Short, and The Hateful Eight as well as cinema classics Back to the Future and Grease (again).
