The full list of 2024 Oscar nominees – and how to watch them

The nominees have been announced for the 2024 Academy Awards – with the Barbenheimer phenomenon continuing (despite major snubs).

This morning Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid unveiled the films and individuals vying for awards honours at this year’s Oscars. Reflecting their dominance of 2023, the pair of films colloquially known as Barbenheimer has a total of 21 nominations—with the split favouring Christopher Nolan’s biopic over Greta Gerwig’s modern fairy tale.

Oppenheimer’s 13 nominations span most major categories (Best Picture, Director, Leading Actor, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay etc) with the unsurprising exception of Best Actress—Emily Blunt nominated for Best Supporting Actress, however.

Barbie, on the other hand, has suffered this year’s most overt and egregious snub. Despite counting Best Picture among its eight nominations, which include Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Barbie has been excluded from both the Director and Leading Actress categories. Apparently it just made itself…

Despite this, it’s still great to see three films directed by women among the Best Picture nominees, with Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives joining Barbie in the category, the first time three female-directed films have been nominated.

Poor Things has made a strong showing in this year’s noms, second only to Oppenheimer after securing nods in 11 categories. Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is third with 10 noms (with a couple of surprising omissions in the Leading Actor and Adapted Screenplay categories), then Barbie’s 8 and Maestro’s 7 noms round out the five most-nominated films.

We’ll dedicate more time to analysing this year’s Oscar nominations and predicting the winners in coming weeks as we count down to the big day on March 10 (US time). Read on for the full list of nominations—and where you can watch them (click the titles below for viewing info).

Killers of the Flower Moon

Best picture

American Fiction

The great Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) leads this TIFF award winner as a frustrated Black novelist who, as a form of protest, writes a joke novel full of tired and offensive Black tropes—only for it to garner popularity and acclaim.

Anatomy of a Fall

Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann) leads this Palme d’Or courtroom drama as a woman suspected of her husband’s death. The sole witness? Their blind son.

Barbie

One half of the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

The Holdovers

Reuniting 20 years after Oscar winner Sideways, actor Paul Giamatti and director Alexander Payne combine for this dramedy that feels like it came straight out of the ’70s, telling the story of a grumpy teacher forced to take care of a teenage trouble-maker during the Christmas holiday season.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorsese’s crime saga stars two current Oscar nominees, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the story is based on a brutal string of crimes that befell the Osage Nation after they struck oil.

Maestro

Bradley Cooper’s second shot at directing tells the life story of famed American composer Leonard Bernstein. Cooper embodies the titular role with Oscar-nominated makeup work for Bernstein’s later years, starring alongside Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre.

Oppenheimer

The other half of the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

Past Lives

A married woman living in America is suddenly reunited with her childhood sweetheart from South Korea in writer-director Celine Song’s tender tale about love, destiny, and identity.

Poor Things

The combo of Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos prove strong once again, following 2018’s The Favourite with another mighty Oscars contender about a woman brought back from the dead to experience life all over again.

The Zone of Interest

Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, hell of a year for her) leads this WWII drama from filmmaker Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast), who’s up for an Oscar for his direction. Hüller plays a mother trying to build a dream life for her family. She’s also married to the commandant of the Auschwitz camp located next to their garden.
