Does The New Mutants have an official NZ release date yet?
When – and how – will X-Men horror spinoff The New Mutant arrive for our viewing pleasure? We tell you everything we know so far.
This poor film… Much like its lead characters, it’s been kept prisoner against its will trying to fight for release.
The New Mutants was the last X-Men film made by 20th Century Fox before they were bought/absorbed by Disney. Following the successes of Logan and Deadpool, The New Mutants continued to embrace radically new directions for the X-Men universe by taking on a darker horror aesthetic. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), the film follows a new cast of young mutants forced to fight their way out of a creepy psychiatric hospital.
The film was meant to come out in 2018 but Fox wanted to avoid clashing with Deadpool 2. So it got pushed back to early 2019, only to clash with Dark Phoenix. Then it got pushed to August 2019, but the Disney merger caused further setbacks. The following date, March 2020, fell victim to the global pandemic.
Has The New Mutants‘ impressively long string of bad luck finally come to an end? Thankfully, it has. Walt Disney has given New Zealand and Australia an official cinema release date: 3 September 2020.
