The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari is an upcoming Netflix documentary on the 2019 volcanic eruption in Aotearoa, in which 22 lives were lost. It’s a story filled with tragedy, heroism, and lots of questions raised about how this situation occurred in the first place.

There have been a number of local documentaries covering the eruption at Whakaari. For this Netflix doco, Ron Howard and Leonardo DiCaprio have stepped in as executive producers with Academy Award-nominated Rory Kennedy (Last Days in Vietnam) directing the feature.
The official synopsis says The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari “chronicles the minute-by-minute accounts of the eruption in 2019. The documentary was done in collaboration with the local community and puts the people who experienced this tragedy first, allowing them to tell their own story, in their own way.”
