When will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse be released in New Zealand?
It was inevitable that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse would be getting a sequel— the 2018 animated movie was both a smash hit and one of the greatest superhero films of all time. And so, we are extremely happy to tell you that Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse is hitting cinemas on June 1.
The project was formerly known as Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part One, being the first of two sequels, but now the naming conventions have settled down a tad and the third film, now titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.
Once again, our hero is Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), who inherited the mantle of Spider-Man in the first film when his universe’s Spider-Man was killed, only to discover a whole heap of parallel worlds, each with their own web-themed friendly neighbourhood hero.
Some of those will be returning for the sequel, including Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen and Jake Johnson’s middle-aged, schlubby Peter B. Parker. This time around we’re getting a ton of new Spideys too, including Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman, and Daniel Kaluuya as the mohawked Spider-Punk (keen for that one, tbh).
The plot, which comes to us courtesy of writing team Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callaham, is being closely guarded, but we’ve heard that we’ll be visiting six different universes, each rendered in their own animation style. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse set a pretty high bar in terms of visuals: that movie is straight-up beautiful to look at, so it’ll be interesting to see if the sequel can surpass what has gone before.
Other than that, we can tell from the trailer that we’re getting a whole lot more trans-dimensional Spider-Men (Spider-Mans?), so maybe keep yourself amused by freeze-framing the relevant scene and counting the cameos while we wait the long months until Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theatrical.
